Implementation
The Implementation process
After long research and planning, we had to decide how we were going to implement this. We came up with the idea of traveling to the elementary building and teach younger student the basics of Spanish. Through research, we discovered that the younger the students are, the easier it will be for them to pick up the language. We chose to go into Mrs. Gantz and Mrs. Huff's kindergarten classrooms twice a week and teach the basics of Spanish.
We began by teaching them the colors. We showed engaged with them directly by playing games, doing worksheets, and singing songs with them. The activity they enjoyed the most was a game in which they were to go around the room and find a color we had called out in Spanish. For example, Carlos would say, "find something that is the color 'rojo'." The students would then look around the room for the color red. After they got the grasp of colors and a basic introduction to a new language, we taught them simple numbers. We did most of the same teaching strategies as we did with the colors with the numbers. They were not as interested in learning numbers as they were colors, but they seemed to enjoy the lesson plans we had for them. Numbers are a more difficult task to learn because you can't teach them in very many ways, so we stuck to easy worksheets to get them involved. By the last time we visited them, they had a firm grasp of the basic instructions of a new language. They could quickly count to 10 in Spanish as well as tell us any color we had asked them. The kindergarten students did a great job of keeping up with our lesson plans and really enjoyed learning new things. |
